Works on Paper was established when Carolyn Frisa relocated to Vermont from Boston in 2008. She has spent the last ten years of her professional career conserving a wide range of artistic and historic works on paper. Recent projects include the conservation of Audubon's Birds of America, prints and drawings by Alexander Calder, watercolor portraits by early American artists including Rufus Porter, and the treatment and installation of historic Lincrusta wallpaper at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Carolyn received an undergraduate degree in the history of art from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She completed her master's degree in paper conservation at Camberwell College of Arts in London, England in 2000. After receiving her degree, she spent the following year working as an assistant
paper conservator at the Tate Britain Museum. Prior to establishing Works on Paper, Carolyn was employed as an associate paper conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in
Andover, Massachusetts.

Carolyn is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) and a member of the AIC Book & Paper Group and the AIC Conservators in Private Practice Group. She is a founding member of the Collections Care and Conservation Alliance. She is also a member of the Institute of Conservation, the New England Conservation Association and the New England Museum Association. Carolyn has presented lectures to professional and public audiences on the identification and conservation of historic wallpaper and on the preservation and conservation of art and archival collections on paper. She actively pursues professional development within the field of paper conservation.

The Conservation Studio

The Works on Paper studio is fully equipped to provide a complete range of professional conservation treatments. Our museum-quality DSLR camera, UV-examination lights, and digital microscope offer a range of options for the investigation and documentation of objects brought to us for conservation. In addition to a large stainless steel sink, a drying rack, a number of flattening presses and tables, and drying boards, we also have a full complement of specialized paper conservation equipment. This includes suction platens, HEPA-filtered vacuums, and an artificial light bleaching unit. Our studio is climate controlled and equipped with a centrally-monitored security system. In addition, its large size
(over 2,000 square feet) allows us to handle large collections at one time and to treat a wide variety
of oversized objects.
